Diabetes Drug Shows Potential to Fight Lung Cancer

Diabetes Drug Shows Potential to Fight Lung Cancer, Study Finds

A new study reveals that metformin, a common medication used by millions of people with type 2 diabetes, may also have the ability to fight lung cancer.

Researchers at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York, led by Dr. Sai Yendamuri, found that metformin can enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapy drugs used to treat lung tumors. However, the findings come with a significant caveat.

Dr. Yendamuri explained that the anti-cancer effects of metformin are only activated in cases of obesity. The study observed that overweight individuals who used metformin and underwent surgery had a reduced likelihood of cancer recurrence over a longer period.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 235,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer annually, with more than 125,000 deaths attributed to the disease each year.

The study's findings were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
