Traffic Noise Increases Stress and Anxiety

Traffic Noise Increases Stress and Anxiety, Study Finds

A new study has revealed that traffic noise can increase stress and anxiety by diminishing the positive effects of natural sounds.

Previous research indicated that natural sounds, such as birdsong, can help regulate blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. In this study, British researchers analyzed how exposure to natural sounds and traffic noise affects people's mood and stress levels.

Participants were exposed to three-minute audio clips of natural sounds, traffic noise, and combinations of both. Their reactions were measured before and after listening.

The findings showed that natural sounds reduced stress and anxiety and improved mood. However, the introduction of traffic noise significantly diminished these benefits.

The study, conducted by the University of the West of England and the Bat Conservation Trust, was published in the journal PLOS ONE. Researchers emphasized that reducing urban traffic noise is essential to maximize the mental health benefits of natural sounds.

This research underscores the importance of creating quieter urban environments to support well-being.
