UNICEF Warns of Rising HIV Rates Among Young Women

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has raised alarm over the increasing rate of HIV infections among young women and girls.

According to media reports, UNICEF highlighted the concerning trend, noting that many women and adolescent girls lack access to effective prevention and treatment for the disease.

In a report, UNICEF revealed that in 2023, 96,000 girls and 41,000 boys aged 15-19 were infected with HIV. This means 7 out of every 10 new cases in this age group were among girls.

The situation is particularly dire in Africa, where 9 out of 10 new HIV infections among adolescents aged 15-19 were found in girls.

UNICEF's Associate Director for HIV/AIDS, Anurita Bains, emphasized, "Children and adolescents are not fully benefiting from the advancements in treatment and prevention services. Investments in resources and efforts to make treatment accessible to everyone must prioritize children living with HIV."
